BI examines Bank Megas fraud cases

JAKARTA: Bank Indonesia shall call for the directors of PT Bank Mega Tbk this week regarding the bank's some fund embezzlement cases. The central bank will require them to disclose the investigation results and identify the types of frauds.Supposed Bank Mega is proven guilty, then the listed lender will receive proper sanction, said Governor of Bank Indonesia, Darmin Nasution.We are going to complete the investigation process this week as we are now in the middle of decision making process. We will round up all proceess and take necessary measures, including calling for Bank Mega this week, he said last week.According to him, the investigation results can not be exercised without hearing the testimonials of every party involved.Darmin further added that in Bank Mega and Elnusa's case, BI shall function as regulator and supervisor of banking industry thus the law enforcement process run by the Police will not be interuppted.For the time being, BI shall enhance banking integrity merely to secure the people's confidence.Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia for Monitoring Affairs, Halim Alamsyah has discussed with Bank Mega with regard to the supervision and evaluation. He will also fulfill the House's invitation for a hearing on bank monitoring.Darmin ensured that BI shall detail out and improve the regulation standard of banking industry merely to avoid other fund embezzlement cases.We are now reviewing the current regulations, observing weaknesses in each of regulations, he said. Darmin explained that after reviewing the current cases, it is obviously seen that those frauds are caused by the undisciplined behavior in SOP implementation.(T02/NOM)
